Many global football stars have experienced dips in performance after being diagnosed with pubalgia, the same condition currently affecting Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey.

Partey recently came into the spotlight after Villarreal head coach Marcelino García Toral criticised him for underwhelming performances, only for it to later be revealed that he was struggling with pubalgia.

He now joins a list of global stars whose performances slumped as they were unable to play at full fitness and faced similar criticisms.

What is Pubalgia?

Pubalgia involves intense, deep, and chronic groin pain, often triggered by quick movements, coughing, or sneezing. The pain may radiate to the inner thigh or scrotum and is typically worsened by intense sports activity.

It is primarily caused by overuse, though it can also result from a specific, intense, or traumatic action. The condition stems from an imbalance between the abdominal muscles and hip adductors, which places strain on the pelvic area.

Diagnosis is usually made through a physical exam, though it can be confused with an inguinal hernia (without an actual hernia present). Imaging techniques such as MRI or ultrasound are often used to confirm the condition.

Players who suffered a similar fate

Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)

The young star was diagnosed with pubalgia, which heavily affected his performances. The impact was particularly evident during El Clásico, where Barcelona struggled against Real Madrid due to his underwhelming display.

Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao)

Williams battled the injury in 2025, which limited his game time. His speed and dribbling ability were negatively affected, forcing him to make way for other players.

Franco Mastantuono (Real Madrid)

The Argentine was diagnosed with pubalgia in November 2025 and was sidelined for some time due to groin pain. Upon returning, he struggled to regain form before eventually reclaiming his starting spot on the right wing.

Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

Palmer has also suffered from the recurring injury, sidelining him for much of the 2025/2026 season. Although he has contributed with goals and assists when introduced, he has not been able to play consistently, even when deemed fit.
