One of the players from the Iranian women’s national team changed her mind after being granted asylum in Australia amid ongoing unrest in Iran.

The Iranian women’s team had been eliminated from the Asia Cup, and the players expressed their displeasure by refusing to sing the national anthem.

Concerns about their safety were raised by football fans and world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, who called on the Australian government to grant them asylum.

This move was condemned by Iran’s foreign ministry, which criticised European countries and described the decision as “hypocrisy,” urging the players to return home.

“They slaughtered more than 165 innocent Iranian schoolgirls in a double-tap Tomahawk attack in the city of Minab, and now they want to take our athletes hostage in the name of ‘saving’ them? The audacity and hypocrisy are staggering. To Iran’s women’s football team: don’t worry, Iran awaits you with open arms. Come home,” Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei wrote in a post on X.

Despite this, Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, Tony Burke confirmed that seven squad members had been granted humanitarian visas.

However, hours later it was revealed that one of the players had changed her mind and decided to return to Iran. This prompted officials to relocate the rest of the squad after learning that the player had contacted the Iranian embassy and possibly disclosed their location.

“In Australia, people are able to change their mind, people are able to travel. So, we respect the context in which she made that decision. Unfortunately, in making that decision, she had been advised by her teammates and coach to contact the Iranian embassy and get collected."

"My officials made sure this was her decision, and every question you’d want asked was asked. As a result, the Iranian embassy now knew the location of where everybody was. I immediately gave the instruction for people to be moved, and that’s been dealt with immediately,” Burke said, as reported by The Guardian.
