Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has criticised the technical structure of the Ghana national football team, arguing that Otto Addo was not given the right level of support from the bench during his time in charge.

Speaking on the circumstances that surrounded Addo’s tenure, Vanderpuye suggested that the Ghana Football Association worsened the situation by assembling a technical team that lacked the experience needed to support the head coach.

“We worsened it by giving him a technical bench which is just like him or below him,” he told Citi Sports.

According to the former minister, a head coach at the level of the Black Stars must be surrounded by experienced assistants who can offer guidance, tactical input and alternative ideas during games.

“You don’t choose somebody like Otto Addo and then further assemble a group of new faces to be with him,” Vanderpuye argued.

He questioned whether any of the assistants on the bench possessed the level of expertise required to support the head coach during crucial moments.

“The people who sit behind him, which of them is competent enough for Otto Addo to pick instructions from? That is where I think that the GFA worsened the situation for us,” he added.

Vanderpuye compared the situation to top European clubs where managers are supported by experienced technical staff who can provide valuable advice during matches.

He cited Manchester United as an example, pointing to how teams often ensure that even interim managers are backed by highly experienced assistants on the bench.

His remarks add to the ongoing debates surrounding the management and technical structure of the Black Stars following Addo’s departure.
