Former Germany international, Gerald Asamoah has backed France and Spain as the strongest contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also pointing to a competitive group of challengers including Germany, Argentina and Brazil.

With the tournament set to kick off in June across the United States, Canada and Mexico, Asamoah has been closely assessing the leading national sides as anticipation builds for the expanded global showpiece.

"France is a strong side and also Spain," Asamoah told Flashscore.

"I wouldn't put Germany right at the top, although they can always surprise. Then you have Argentina, with great team spirit, especially with Lionel Messi. Brazil are always unpredictable, you never quite know what you'll get from them."

"But if you ask me, I think it could come down to France and Spain. Spain, in particular, are very good at building a team," he added.

Born in Mampong, Ghana, Asamoah moved to Germany at the age of 12 and went on to become a trailblazer in German football. In 2001, he became the first Africa-born Black player to represent Germany at senior level.

He earned 43 international caps, scored six goals, and featured in two World Cups, finishing as runner-up in 2002 and securing third place on home soil in 2006.

The 2026 World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19 across North America, with expectations already mounting for one of the most open and competitive editions in the tournament’s history.
