Nelson Mandela (L) gave a powerful advice to Carlos Queiroz (R) during his time in South Africa
New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz leaned on wisdom from Nelson Mandela when confronted with questions about expectations and pressure, following his unveiling in Accra on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
A journalist had asked whether he is determined to take Ghana beyond their historic run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and how Ghanaians might react if he falls short at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In response, Queiroz opened up on a defining moment in his life while he was with the South African team in the early 2000s.
“In my career, I have had the privilege, the honour, to work with probably the most special man I have ever met in my life. That big man is President Nelson Mandela,” he begun.

He then shared the exact advice that has stayed with him over the years and which continues to shape his mentality.
“He told me one day, ‘Carlos, we never lose, we win or we learn.' So, I've used these words as guidelines in my life,” he stated.
Queiroz went further to explain how that philosophy influences his approach to challenges and expectations.
“I am not afraid to take risks in my life because I always strive to succeed, because I know that next time, I'll be there again to try in my life to be a successful person,” he added.
For many, his response underlined a mindset built on resilience, growth, and courage, one he now hopes to instill in the Black Stars as they prepare for the global stage.
