Former Black stars player, Augustine Ahinful, has shared an emotional account of personal loss, faith, and resilience, revealing how the death of his wife reshaped his life beyond football.

Speaking with Frank-Kamal Acheampong on GhanaWeb's Sports Check, the ex-Black Stars forward recounted the heartbreaking moment he lost his wife just six months after childbirth in December 2009.

He explained that it was after the childbirth that he discovered she had been battling liver cancer.

“It was a little bit strange because she had just given birth and then six months down the line, she was gone. After her passing, we were told it was liver cancer,” he said.

Ahinful admitted the tragedy left him questioning his faith, especially after the couple had donated land to build a church shortly before her death.

“I was asking God why He would allow someone who supported His work to die with a six-month-old baby,” he added.

However, he said his faith ultimately carried him through the darkest period of his life.

A sermon he heard days after her passing brought him clarity and acceptance.

“It was like God was talking to me… then I understood. He knows what He has done,” he said.

Now a father of four, Ahinful says he has found peace, with his children grown and pursuing education abroad.

“My children are all grown now… they are in the US, and I’m okay. She is in a better place,” he added.
