Former Medeama coach, Yaw Preko
Former Medeama coach, Yaw Preko has opened up on the evolution of coaching in Ghana, contrasting the strict approach of past managers with the more player-friendly methods of today.
In a interview on the GFA podcast, Preko revealed that coaching was never part of his original plans, but years in the dugout have reshaped his perspective on player management.
“Back then, coaches were like teachers. You couldn’t approach them or joke with them. They were very strict,” he recalled.
He referenced his experience under the late John Deschenes, describing him as “very strict” and difficult to approach during his early playing days.
However, Preko believes the modern game demands a different approach.
“Now, you have to be flexible. Sometimes you need to break the ice so players can open up. But when it’s time to work, they must know you’re the coach,” he added.
The Accra Great Olympics coach emphasized that balancing discipline with approachability is key to success in today’s football environment.
He added that while relationships between players and coaches have become more relaxed, professionalism must remain intact.
