Some social media users remain puzzled over the non-disclosure of the reason behind the late call-up of Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare for the Mexico friendly.

The decision was announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on May 7, 2026, as the technical team prepares for the trip and continues assessing the squad.

The announcement did not specify the exact reason for the late change—whether due to injury, withdrawal, or other factors, which resulted in the inclusion of the team’s number one goalkeeper ahead of the friendly.

Since the announcement, social media users have questioned why Asare was called up late, as the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper was expected to be reserved for subsequent friendlies before the World Cup.

Some individuals argued that the decision highlights instability within the technical team despite Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz taking charge.

Others expressed displeasure, insisting that Asare’s presence is unnecessary, especially when the squad is largely composed of second-string players expected to justify their inclusion.

Queiroz has been cautioned to stamp his authority and remain firm in his decisions regarding the team, or risk facing the same challenges that led previous coaches to exit the role due to poor results.

Meanwhile, Gideon Aseako has yet to disclose the reason for his omission from the squad ahead of the Mexico friendly, which would have given him the chance to prove himself.
