Today, May 9, 2026, marks exactly 25 years since football fans and officials tragically lost their lives while watching Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The incident sparked public outrage, prompting football authorities and security agencies to initiate investigations and hold those responsible accountable.

Due to the significance of the tragedy, the sporting fraternity, led by the National Sports Authority, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and other associations, holds a brief ceremony each year to honour the deceased as a mark of remembrance.

The commemoration also serves as a reminder to fans and officials to conduct themselves responsibly during football matches, in order to prevent a recurrence of such a tragedy.

The disaster, which occurred on May 9, 2001, remains the darkest day in Ghanaian football history.

About the disaster

With barely five minutes left to play, violence broke out after Hearts of Oak striker Ishmael Addo scored what appeared to be the winning goal.

Unlike today, when empty seats are common during Hearts-Kotoko matches, the then Ohene Djan Stadium was filled to capacity.

The goal angered Kotoko fans, who felt cheated by the referee’s decision. They began removing plastic seats and throwing them onto the pitch, along with sachets of water.

Efforts to calm the crowd failed, leading police to fire tear gas into the packed stands while the gates remained locked, leaving fans with no escape route.

This triggered a stampede as hundreds of people, blinded by the gas, attempted to flee.

Official reports confirmed that 127 people died, making it the deadliest sporting tragedy on the African continent.

The incident is marked every year to remember the innocent lives lost during what should have been a simple football match.
