The 24th edition of the African Senior Athletics Championship officially came to life on Monday, May 11, 2026, with a vibrant opening ceremony held ahead of the start of competition at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra.

The championship, which begins today, May 12, will see over 700 athletes from 42 countries compete across six days of track and field action as Africa’s finest athletes battle for continental glory.

The opening ceremony brought together government officials, athletics administrators, athletes and fans in a celebration of African sports and culture.

Kofi Adams, Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, addressed representatives from the participating nations and welcomed them to the country.

He expressed confidence in Ghana’s readiness to host a successful championship while encouraging athletes to compete in the spirit of unity and excellence.

Chief of Staff of the president of Ghana, Julius Debrah, also delivered remarks, officially welcoming athletes, officials and supporters to Ghana and wishing all participating countries success in the competition.

Among the high-profile dignitaries present were Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, and Jackson Tuwei, vice president of the global athletics governing body.

The ceremony also showcased Ghanaian culture through energetic traditional dance displays and musical performances from Edem and Stonebwoy, who entertained the crowd with thrilling performances.

With the stage now set, attention turns to the track as the continent’s top athletes begin competition in Accra.
