Ghanaian athlete Janet Mensah was disqualified from heat one of the women’s 100m race after failing to start at the University of Ghana Stadium on Tuesday May 12, 2026.

It was a tense moment for the sprinter, who had initially committed a false start but was fortunate to escape immediate disqualification.

On the second attempt, however, Janet shockingly stood still when the starting bell rang.

Overwhelmed by the moment, she was unable to run and was therefore disqualified from the race.

She appeared visibly distraught, placing both hands on her head as she walked toward the dressing room.

Meanwhile, Aisha Jaffer of TI Amass SHS and another Ghanaian athlete finished in fourth place, while Leticia Ohenewaa of St. Louis SHS came in fifth.

This means Ghana will not advance to the final of the women’s 100m race.

Nigerian athletes dominated the heats, securing first place in most races and qualifying impressively for the next round.
