Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has revealed that he first experienced heavy criticism from Ghanaians during Ghana’s clash against Namibia at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

The all-time leading scorer for the Black Stars made the revelation while reflecting on the emotional highs and lows of representing Ghana at major tournaments.

According to Gyan, the expectations surrounding the national team became intense after the Black Stars’ impressive performance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

“Coming home after the World Cup, I was very proud of myself. My family was proud and Ghanaians were proud too,” he said.

The former striker explained that the success of the 2006 squad transformed the public’s expectations of the Black Stars and increased pressure on players to consistently deliver.

Gyan noted that although he enjoyed admiration and hero status after the World Cup, the atmosphere shifted during the 2008 AFCON hosted in Ghana, particularly during the game against Namibia.

“The game against Namibia in 2008 was when I really felt criticism from Ghanaians,” he admitted.

Despite the scrutiny, Gyan said such moments are part of football and helped shape his mentality as a player.

The former striker also reflected on how the 2006 World Cup elevated his career, describing the tournament as a turning point that established him on the global stage.

“At that young age, I became the second highest-paid player at Udinese after Di Natale. That was when I felt I had done something special,” he revealed.
