For decades, Ghana’s World Cup squads have largely been dominated by players based abroad, with Europe often serving as the main pathway to football’s biggest stage.

Yet, a select group of goalkeepers have defied that trend, earning places in the Black Stars squad while still playing their football in the Ghana Premier League.

Benjamin Asare

The latest to join that exclusive club is Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who has been named in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His inclusion means six home-based goalkeepers have now received World Cup call-ups while playing in the domestic league.

George Owu (2006)

The first was George Owu, who represented Ghana at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany while on the books of AshantiGold. Although he did not feature during the tournament, his selection marked a significant milestone for locally based players as Ghana made its World Cup debut.

Stephen Ahorlu and Daniel Agyei (2010)

Four years later, two Ghana Premier League goalkeepers made the squad that travelled to South Africa. Stephen Ahorlu earned his place from Heart of Lions, while Daniel Agyei was selected from Liberty Professionals after his heroics helped Ghana win the U20 World Cup in 2009.

Ghana went on to enjoy its best-ever World Cup campaign, reaching the quarter-finals and narrowly missing out on a historic semi-final appearance.

Stephen Adams (2014)

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Stephen Adams carried the flag for the domestic league after impressing with Aduana FC.

Danlad Ibrahim (2022)

Eight years later, Asante Kotoko’s Danlad Ibrahim was included in Ghana’s squad for the tournament in Qatar, continuing the tradition of home-based goalkeepers reaching football’s grandest stage.

Now, Benjamin Asare has added his name to that distinguished list. His selection is not only a personal achievement but also further evidence that the Ghana Premier League remains capable of producing players trusted to represent the nation at the highest level.
