What was meant to be a proud step toward the 2026 World Cup has turned into a travel ordeal for Somalia’s leading referee, Omar Abdulkadir Artan.

Artan, who had overcome earlier visa complications after a wave of online support helped secure his approval, finally made the journey to the United States.

According to reports, he travelled out of Kenya, transited through Turkey, and eventually landed in the USA with hopes of joining other elite officials preparing for FIFA duties.

But upon arrival, the situation took a dramatic turn. Immigration authorities denied him entry, sending him back to Turkey without a clear explanation.

The decision has triggered confusion and concern within African football circles, especially given his growing reputation on the international stage.

The Head of Referees at the Somalia Football Association has since formally written to FIFA seeking urgent clarification over the incident.

FIFA has acknowledged the matter and says it will respond as soon as possible, as pressure builds for a resolution.

Meanwhile, Artan is in Istanbul, awaiting further instructions after a long and uncertain journey.

The situation is particularly sensitive as all selected match officials are currently based in Miami for a FIFA seminar, before travelling onward to officiate pre-tournament assignments across Canada and Mexico.
