Accra Lions coach, Richard Afoakwa
Accra Lions FC head coach Richard Afoakwa has turned down an opportunity to join Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak after committing his future to the Division One League club with a new contract.
"It is for the sake of continuity and believe in the project here at Accra Lions. I have no doubt this is the best place for me to develop and grow’’ Afoakwa exclusively told GHANAsoccernet.
Afoakwa was on the radar of Hearts of Oak as the Phobians sought to strengthen both their technical and youth development structures ahead of the new season.
The promising tactical brain was offered a dual role as Assistant Coach of the senior team and Head Coach of the club’s youth side.
His renewed commitment underscores the club's confidence in his vision and leadership as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
Afoakwa joined Accra Lions as deputy to James Francis in August 2025 after leaving second-tier side Inter Allies FC
But in January 2026, he was promoted as Head Coach following the dismissal of Francis.
Afoakwa is a graduate from the University of Cape Coast where he earned a degree in Psychology and Education.
He previously worked at WAFA and defunct Nsoatreman FC.
