Marvin Senaya has been phenomenal for the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup
Ghana defender, Marvin Senaya, has received one of the biggest individual honours of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far after being named in Opta Analyst’s Team of the Group Stage following a series of commanding performances for the Black Stars.
The 25-year-old right-back earned his place alongside some of football’s biggest stars, including Lionel Messi, Vinicius Jr, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, in a team selected based on performances and advanced statistical analysis from the tournament’s opening phase.
Senaya was one of only two African defenders included in the XI, joining Cape Verde centre-back, Diney Borges, while veteran goalkeeper Vozinha also made the cut after inspiring his country’s historic qualification for the knockout stage.
Spain’s Pau Cubarsi and Japan’s Nakamura completed the back four.

According to Opta, Senaya’s standout display came in Ghana’s goalless draw against England, where he produced arguably the best defensive performance by any full-back in the group stage.
Tasked with containing England winger Anthony Gordon, the Ghana defender won the battle comfortably with a disciplined and composed display.
The statistics behind his selection were equally impressive. Senaya attempted a tournament-high 18 tackles during the group stage and won 24 of his 38 duels.
He also recorded a 72% success rate in Opta’s “true tackles” metric, which measures a defender’s effectiveness in one-on-one situations even when the opponent retains possession after contact with the ball.
His recognition caps an impressive group-stage campaign for Ghana, whose defensive solidity helped the Black Stars secure a place in the knockout rounds.
