Benjamin Asare will remain Ghana’s number one at the 2026 World Cup
Ghana have received a timely fitness boost ahead of their World Cup Round of 32 clash against Colombia on Saturday, July 4, 2026, with key players returning to training, but no change is expected in the goalkeeping hierarchy.
According to Ghana Football Association Communications Director Henry Asante Twum, goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi has fully recovered from the injury that kept him out of recent matches.
“He has been training. The reason why they didn’t put him in the England game was precautionary. The goalkeeper’s coach decided to bring in Benjamin Asare and once things went well, they decided to stick with him,” Asante Twum told Sporty TV.
Ati-Zigi is now declared match fit and available for selection, but Benjamin Asare is expected to maintain his position as Ghana’s number one for the Colombia encounter.

There is also positive news on the injury front regarding forward Antoine Semenyo, who picked up a knock during the 2-1 defeat to Croatia.
Despite initial fears over an ankle issue, he is now expected to be ready for the knockout fixture.
“What I can say is that he is fine. The doctors have been working on him. He had an initial pain in the ankle. From the day we played the game to this morning he is fine. He is able to walk freely without any support and he says the pain has reduced,” he added.
Defender Jerome Opoku is also on course for a return after suffering a groin issue, with reports indicating he should rejoin full training with the squad imminently.
