Ati Zigi made more goal interventions despite facing fewer shots than Asare

Lawrence Ati Zigi may have played fewer minutes than Benjamin Asare at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but the Saint Gallen goalkeeper still produced the stronger shot-stopping numbers.

According to FIFA Training Centre data, Ati Zigi recorded seven goal interventions during Ghana's campaign, compared to Asare’s five, despite facing fewer attempts on goal.

Asare carried the heavier overall workload, facing 35 shots across his appearances against Panama, England and Croatia. Ati Zigi, meanwhile, faced 23 attempts across his two appearances, with his biggest test coming in the Round of 32 clash against Colombia.

However, when Ghana needed decisive interventions, Ati Zigi delivered.

Against Colombia, he faced 20 shots and produced a series of important stops to keep the Black Stars competitive during a difficult knockout encounter.

The FIFA data show that Ati Zigi registered six save-and-deflect interventions and one save he retained, highlighting his ability to respond in high-pressure moments.

Asare deserves credit for stepping into the starting role after Ati Zigi's injury and handling a demanding group-stage schedule, particularly the 19 shots he faced against England.

But the numbers show that Ati Zigi was more effective at turning his defensive actions into goal-preventing moments.

Asare faced more shots but Ati Zigi made the bigger impact when called upon, and in that area, his efficiency gave him the edge.
