Spain are world champions once again after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, capping a remarkable tournament with another statement performance.
The victory sealed Spain’s second World Cup title, 16 years after their maiden triumph in South Africa in 2010 and confirmed the rise of a new generation that blended youthful brilliance with tactical maturity.
Their road to the trophy was anything but straightforward. Spain began the tournament with a frustrating goalless draw against Cape Verde, raising early questions about their title credentials.
However, Luis de la Fuente’s men quickly found their rhythm, producing a series of composed performances to grow stronger with every knockout round.
La Roja dispatched Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 before edging Portugal 1-0 in a tense Iberian derby.
A dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium followed in the quarter-finals, while a clinical 2-0 win against France booked their place in the final.
Awaiting them was defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, who had mounted another impressive run to the final after victories over Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England.
But on football’s biggest stage, Spain proved too disciplined and too resilient.
They controlled key phases of the contest, frustrated Argentina’s attacking threats and eventually found the decisive goal through Ferran Torres in the second half of extra time that separated the two footballing giants.
