Cristiano Ronaldo has conquered almost every stage football has to offer. Five Ballon d’Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles, European Championship glory with Portugal, the UEFA Nations League and well over 970 career goals have cemented his place among the greatest players in history.
Yet there is one mountain the legendary forward has never climbed: the FIFA World Cup. With Portugal getting eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup before the final, the 41-year-old’s dream appears to have finally slipped away.
If this proves to be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, Ronaldo will retire without lifting the one trophy that has defined the careers of legends such as Pelé, Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane and Lionel Messi.

Six World Cups, no medal
Ronaldo made his World Cup debut in Germany in 2006 and remarkably became the first men’s player to score in six different World Cups after featuring in the 2026 edition.
Despite the incredible longevity, however, he leaves the tournament without a winners’ medal, runners-up medal or even a third-place finish.
His closest brush with glory came in 2006 when Portugal finished fourth after losing to France in the semi-finals before falling to Germany in the third-place playoff.
No World Cup final appearance
For all his greatness, Ronaldo never managed to lead Portugal into a World Cup final. His nation reached the semi-finals only once during his career, while the remaining campaigns ended in the Round of 16, quarter-finals or group stage.
Unlike his club career, where finals became almost routine, the World Cup always proved an insurmountable challenge.
Never won the Golden Ball or Golden Boot
The World Cup has celebrated many iconic individual campaigns, but Ronaldo never walked away with its biggest personal honours.
He never won the Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player or the Golden Boot awarded to the top scorer.

Ronaldo ended his World Cup career with 11 goals across six tournaments, becoming the first men’s player to score in six different FIFA World Cups.
He scored once in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022, four times in 2018, and added three more in 2026 to take his tally to 11.

It would be unfair to judge Ronaldo’s legacy solely through the World Cup. His influence on modern football remains unmatched, and his achievements at club level and with Portugal have inspired generations.
He became the first player to score in six different World Cups and consistently delivered on football’s biggest nights outside the tournament.
But the World Cup has always been football’s ultimate prize.
