Alexander Djiku names John Mensah as his greatest inspiration

Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has revealed that former Ghana captain John Mensah remains his biggest inspiration as a centre-back, describing the ex-defender as "the real rock."

Speaking in an interview on Beyond the Whistle, Djiku said he admired Mensah long before representing Ghana and was delighted to eventually meet the Black Stars legend during national team duty.

"I like his style of playing. It's John Mensah. The real rock. I met him before one crucial game, and I was happy to meet him for the first time," Djiku said.

The defender explained that he tries to emulate Mensah's fighting spirit and leadership whenever he wears the Black Stars jersey.

According to Djiku, a central defender must lead by example, showing commitment in duels and motivating teammates throughout the game.

"You have to show everything because if everybody follows you in the good things, like duels and fighting spirit, then the team follows. For me, the most important positions are centre-back, midfield and striker," he noted.

The 30-year-old also highlighted communication as the most important attribute for a defender, insisting that constant organisation at the back helps maintain clean sheets and improves the team's overall performance.
