Ampofo Ankrah calls for accountability to end Ghana's sports infrastructure crisis

Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has called for greater accountability among sports administrators and stakeholders, insisting that Ghana cannot continue to repeat the same mistakes while expecting improved results.

Speaking at the launch of the Ga Mantse Tennis Tournament, Ampofo Ankrah questioned why Ghana still lacks world-class sporting facilities despite football remaining the country's biggest sporting brand.

He cited the state of major facilities including the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Cape Coast Stadium and Swedru Sports Stadium, stressing that the discussion should go beyond infrastructure to examine the responsibility of sporting federations and associations.

"We keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results. It wouldn't work like that," he said.

"The entitlement of sporting federations and associations without putting in the required effort is something we need to address."

The NSA boss urged the media to lead constructive discussions on the challenges facing Ghanaian sports, particularly the country's inability to maintain world-class pitches more than two decades after hosting the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ampofo Ankrah stressed that leadership across the sports sector must be held accountable for results.

"If I'm in charge and I don't deliver, the President should replace me with someone who can. The same applies to every sports leader. Whether it's me, GFA President Kurt Okraku or the Sports Minister, if we don't deliver, we should make way for others who can do better," he stated.

He further expressed concern over the declining appeal of the Ghana Premier League, noting that empty stadiums point to deeper structural problems that require collective solutions.

According to him, improving Ghanaian football should not rest solely on football administrators, but should involve all stakeholders, including individuals outside the football fraternity who can contribute fresh ideas and expertise.

Ampofo Ankrah urged the media to focus on/JKN solution-driven conversations that will help revive Ghana's sports sector and restore public confidence.
