Black Queens’ 6-3 thriller over Zimbabwe remains WAFCON’s highest-scoring match

The Black Queens of Ghana continue to hold one of the most remarkable records in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with their unforgettable 6-3 victory over Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff of the 2000 tournament still standing as the competition’s highest-scoring match.

Played in South Africa, the bronze medal encounter produced an astonishing nine goals, with Ghana racing into an early lead and delivering a breathtaking attacking performance.

Elizabeth Baidu opened the scoring in the opening minute before Adjoa Bayor scored twice to extend Ghana’s advantage.

Memunatu Daku and Gloria Foriwa also found the back of the net, while Ghana’s sixth goal capped a first-half masterclass that saw the Black Queens take a commanding 6-2 lead into the break.

Zimbabwe managed to score three times, but they were unable to stop Ghana’s relentless attacking display.

The victory secured the bronze medal for Ghana after the Black Queens narrowly missed out on a place in the final following a semi-final defeat to hosts South Africa.

Although Ghana did not lift the trophy, the Black Queens etched their names into WAFCON history with a record that has stood for more than two decades.

The thrilling 6-3 triumph over Zimbabwe remains the benchmark for goalscoring entertainment in the tournament, with no match in WAFCON history surpassing the nine-goal spectacle.
