FIFA opens disciplinary case against Argentina

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against several Argentina players, assistant coach Roberto Ayala and Spain midfielder Gavi, following the ugly scenes that marred the aftermath of the 2026 World Cup final.

The governing body’s Disciplinary Committee is investigating incidents that occurred after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the tournament.

The final whistle sparked a confrontation between players from both sides, with Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes at the centre of the chaos after clashes involving Spain’s Eric García and Gavi.

Paredes faces multiple charges related to alleged assault, while teammate Nahuel Molina is also being investigated over his involvement in incidents involving Spain players.

Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also been charged following his confrontation with Spain midfielder Dani Olmo during the post-match scenes.

Spain’s Gavi, who was involved in the altercation, is facing a separate case for alleged unsporting behaviour, alongside Argentina’s Thiago Almada and Molina.

FIFA’s investigation goes beyond the final, with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) also facing disciplinary action over several alleged breaches during the tournament.

These include possible discriminatory behaviour from supporters, political messaging after the semi-final win over England, team misconduct, security issues and other protocol violations.

The cases will now allow the players, officials and the AFA to present their defence before FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee makes a final decision. Possible punishments could include fines, suspensions or other sanctions depending on the findings.
