2026 Commonwealth Games: Joe Paul books 200m final spot, Dadzie, Bokpin miss out

Joseph Paul Amoah has kept Ghana's medal hopes alive in the men's 200m after producing a season-best performance to qualify for the final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday, July 30, 2026, while compatriots James Dadzie and Mustapha Bokpin saw their campaigns come to an end in the semi-finals.

Running in Semi-final 2, Amoah delivered a composed and powerful race, clocking 20.24 seconds, his fastest time of the season, to secure one of the two automatic qualification spots for the final.

The Ghanaian sprinter matched the time of Jamaica's Jevaughn Powell, who also finished in 20.24s, with Amoah advancing comfortably from a highly competitive race. Botswana's Prince Phaezel Selepe followed in 20.31s, while South Africa's Mthi Mthimkulu placed fourth in 20.39s.

Amoah's performance continues his impressive run in Glasgow after he also topped his opening-round heat, reinforcing his status as one of the favourites for a place on the podium.

Earlier in Semi-final 1, James Dadzie narrowly missed out on qualification after finishing fourth with 20.52 seconds. Despite another solid run, the time was not enough to earn one of the automatic places or a fastest-loser berth in a stacked field.

Mustapha Bokpin also fell short in Semi-final 3, crossing the line seventh in 20.65 seconds to end his campaign.

With Dadzie and Bokpin eliminated, Amoah now carries Ghana's hopes in the men's 200m final as he chases the country's first sprint medal of the Games.
