Idi Amin’s grandson Abdul Aziz disqualified after headbutting England boxer

Ugandan boxer Abdul Aziz, grandson of former dictator Idi Amin, was disqualified after headbutting his English opponent, Damar Thomas, during their super-heavyweight bout at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Following the fight, Aziz went on a rant accusing the judges and organisers of racism, claiming his disqualification was unfair.

He alleged that his punches were not properly scored and insisted there was a deliberate attempt to eliminate him in favour of the English boxer.

“When you watch the previous fights of England, their boxers commit a lot of fouls. I land a heavy punch on him, they never count. Instead of counting, they deduct me. I am a Black African. He is in his homeland,” Aziz said after the bout.

Officials, however, clarified that Aziz was disqualified specifically for headbutting his opponent, which was considered a clear breach of boxing regulations and warranted the decision.

Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare, who is also Ugandan, rejected Aziz’s racism claims, stressing that the competition was conducted fairly.

“We at Commonwealth Sport believe every athlete is treated fairly and in a non-discriminatory manner. We are inclusive. That is a field-of-play decision and something said in the heat of the moment,” Rukare said.

Aziz, who never met his grandfather, had been hoping to win Uganda’s first Commonwealth boxing medal since Auckland 1990. A victory over Thomas would have guaranteed him at least a bronze medal.

However, he had already received warnings in the previous two rounds and was trailing on all judges’ scorecards before the disqualification.
