Malawi stun Egypt to move top of Group C

Malawi continued their dream debut campaign at the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with an impressive 3-1 victory over Egypt to strengthen their position at the top of Group C.

The Scorchers built on their shock opening-day win over defending champions Nigeria by securing another three valuable points, taking their tally to six points from two matches.

Egypt fought hard but struggled to contain a confident Malawi side, who displayed composure in attack and resilience in defence to secure back-to-back victories in Morocco.

The result leaves Malawi on the verge of a historic quarter-final qualification, while Egypt’s hopes of advancing have been severely dented after suffering a second consecutive defeat.

Malawi’s remarkable start to the tournament has made them one of the surprise performers of the competition, with the team showing confidence and determination against two of Africa’s established women’s football nations.

The Scorchers stunned Nigeria in their opening fixture before following it up with another commanding performance against Egypt, demonstrating their ability to compete at the highest level of African women’s football.

For Egypt, the defeat leaves them needing a positive result in their final group match to keep their qualification hopes alive. The North Africans must now regroup and find a way to overturn their difficult position in Group C.

With one round of group matches remaining, Malawi sit top of Group C and are firmly on course for a historic place in the knockout stage of the continental tournament.
