'I even started coughing blood at one point' - Jeremy Doku speaks

Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has opened up about the physical and emotional struggles he endured during the FIFA World Cup, revealing he played through a serious lung condition while also navigating the birth of his first child.

Speaking in a candid interview shared on YouTube, Doku disclosed that what initially seemed like a minor illness developed into severe chest pain, persistent coughing and eventually blood in his cough, forcing him to seek emergency medical treatment during the tournament.

The Manchester City forward said scans later revealed fluid in his lungs, leaving him unable to train properly ahead of Belgium's matches.

"I couldn't train properly. I was quickly tired,I even started coughing blood at one point," Doku recalled.

Despite his condition, Doku remained determined to contribute whenever possible, but admitted he eventually accepted he could not continue playing at his desired level.

Adding to the emotional rollercoaster, Doku received news that his wife had gone into labour earlier than expected while he was with the national team.

The Belgian international travelled home in time to witness the birth of his son, describing the moment as one of the greatest blessings of his life.

"I arrived two hours before. I witnessed everything. I held him in my hands and spent one night with him before returning," he said.

Although the return journey worsened his physical condition, Doku said the experience gave him a renewed appreciation for family and fatherhood.

"I encourage every father to be there because you respect your wife even more after seeing what she goes through."

Doku believes the difficult period ultimately strengthened his faith and reshaped his perspective on football and life.
