The 91st Ghana Open Championship has been launched in Accra on August 19, 2026, with stakeholders calling on the public and institutions to invest more in the sport.

The championship will be held at the Celebrity Golf Club from September 16–19, 2026, with professional and amateur golfers competing for honours.

The headline sponsor is OmniBSIC Bank Ghana, with a total prize purse of GH¢400,000 for professional golfers, while exciting prizes will also be awarded to amateurs. The sponsorship represents an important commitment to promoting competitive golf in Ghana.

Speaking at the launch, President of the Ghana Golf Association (GGA), Leonard Kwaku Okyere, expressed gratitude to the headline sponsor for its support, adding that indigenous culture will be showcased during the championship.

“We expect it to be exciting and very, very worth its salt. We're glad to have a lead sponsor, which is OmniBSIC Bank, and we think that this is to create awareness for other institutions to also come on board for Ghana Open. This is an Open for Ghana, not for a particular club or a particular institution. It's something that is going to promote golf in Ghana and give us the leverage and the mileage. Basically, we are very, very grateful for the other sponsors too.

"It's not only the bank but also people who support golf in the country. Traditionally, we're heading into the Homowo season, so we intend to have the Ga tradition prominently featured in this tournament,” he said.

The GGA President further indicated that there has been interest from other countries across the continent, adding that the association is working to improve the championship.

“It's across the board. We have lots of other countries who have been interested. I've just heard that people from Zimbabwe, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia, and other countries are interested.

“Normally, the interest comes when the prize money in the purse is big, then you find more countries participating. Hopefully, we'll set the pace, and we hope that this will also lead us to better tournaments next year. It's going to last for four days,” he added.

The Managing Director of OmniBSIC Bank Ghana, Daniel Asiedu, noted that his outfit was delighted to sponsor the championship and called on other institutions to support golf events to improve the sport's fortunes and help Ghana match the level of investment seen in other African countries.

“Something that has been done for 91 years plus is a good thing. It means that somebody has to be encouraged, and I'm glad that he told us the statistics because if other countries are seeing the importance of golf, then as a country, we need to also wake up.

“And I'm using this medium to call on other institutions and other organisations to support. Golf worldwide is a big thing, just like football is a big thing. But I think in our part of the country, in our part of the world, we have downplayed it," he said.

The MD added that, "And I want us to get to a level where we are all encouraged to play golf because it helps. A lot of people will not go to the gym to exercise. A lot of people will not take out time to even work on their own and things like that. But these are events that, because of the relationships we create and all that, allow you to exercise as well."
