'Kurt Okraku shouldn't contest again' – George Afriyie

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has questioned the possibility of Kurt Okraku seeking a third term as GFA President, insisting that Ghana football needs stronger competition for the top job.

Speaking amid reports that former Black Stars captain André “Dede” Ayew could be considering a future bid for the GFA presidency, Afriyie said competition would be healthy for the administration of Ghana football.

“I heard our captain, Dede Ayew, saying that he wants to contest, and I wish I could even call him a hegemon,” Afriyie said.

However, he clarified that he had not heard an official declaration from Ayew.

“I’m saying that people have said that he wants to contest,” he explained, adding that the GFA “must have that kind of competition.”

Afriyie also took a swipe at suggestions that Kurt Okraku could seek another term in office, saying he does not believe the current GFA President should contest again.

“To my thinking, Kurt doesn’t have to contest. In the coming days, we’ll make the case why he can’t contest,” he stated.

The former GFA Vice President further criticised what he described as attempts to push narratives and prematurely position individuals for top roles within African and world football.

“When I hear these things, it is here in Ghana. It’s where they will push these narratives,” Afriyie said.
