‘That is criminal’ – Rogers and Palmer ‘fight’ over MOTM award

Cole Palmer and his close friend Morgan Rogers were involved in a light-hearted post-match disagreement after Chelsea's entertaining 6-3 victory over Leeds in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, September 9, 2026.

Palmer played a key role in Chelsea's comeback, scoring twice as the Blues recovered to secure their place in the fourth round.

Rogers, however, arguably had an even bigger individual contribution, registering four assists during the thrilling encounter.

The Aston Villa star, who became the most expensive English player ever following his £117million move during the summer, expected his performance to earn him the Player of the Match award.

Instead, the honour went to Palmer, leaving Rogers visibly surprised ahead of their joint interview with Sky Sports.

“Mate, I got four assists. Nah, nah, nah. I can’t believe that. That is mental, he scored a pen!” Rogers said.

Palmer responded by defending his award, pointing to his role in Chelsea's comeback.

“I started the comeback. I’ll shout you out and say you should’ve had it, don’t worry about that,” Palmer said.

Rogers was far from convinced and jokingly hit back: “Don’t mention me, I’m just a bystander. That is criminal.”

He later shared a photograph of himself holding the trophy on Instagram and added: “Serious words need to be had”, accompanied by a laughing emoji.
