Boufal’s Late Dagger: The last time Ghana met Morocco

Ghana will renew their rivalry with Morocco in a friendly, with the meeting set to bring back memories of their last encounter at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The two sides last met in January 2022, when Morocco edged the Black Stars 1-0 in their opening Group C fixture of the 2021 AFCON.

After a largely cagey contest at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé, Ghana appeared set to hold the Atlas Lions to a goalless draw.

However, Sofiane Boufal broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute to hand Morocco all three points.

The forward capitalised on a defensive error before finishing past Ghana goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott, leaving the Black Stars with little time to find an equaliser.

The defeat was a frustrating start to Ghana's campaign, and the team later lost 3-2 to Comoros in their final group game, exiting the tournament at the group stage.

Morocco, meanwhile, progressed from the group and reached the quarter-finals, where Egypt eliminated them.

The upcoming friendly will therefore give Ghana another chance to face the North African side, more than four years after Boufal's late strike settled their last competitive meeting.

The match is expected to form part of Ghana's preparations as the Black Stars continue building towards their upcoming international commitments.
