One Win, Eight Defeats: The numbers behind Ghana’s alarming 11-game run

Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on Thursday, September 24, 2026, has pushed the Black Stars’ recent record into increasingly uncomfortable territory.

The latest setback means Ghana have now won just one of their last 11 matches, with eight defeats and two draws across the period stretching from November 2025 to September 2026. The results also show how difficult it has been for the Black Stars to consistently produce goals.

The run began with a 2-0 defeat to Japan on November 14, 2025, before Ghana suffered another 1-0 loss to South Korea four days later.

It then developed into a five-match losing streak.

Ghana were heavily beaten 5-1 by Austria before losing 2-1 to Germany and 2-0 to Mexico. The sequence finally ended with a 1-1 draw against Wales in June 2026.

The Black Stars then produced their only victory in the 11-game spell, beating Panama 1-0 in their opening World Cup group match.

But even during the World Cup, consistency remained elusive.

Ghana held England to a goalless draw before losing 2-1 to Croatia and 1-0 to Colombia. The 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire has now added another loss to the sequence.

Five goals in 11 games

Perhaps the most striking statistic is Ghana’s attacking output.

The Black Stars have scored only five goals in those 11 matches, averaging just 0.45 goals per game.

They have also failed to score in six of the 11 matches, including their last two outings against Colombia and Côte d’Ivoire.

At the other end, Ghana have conceded 18 goals, giving them a goal difference of -13 during the run.

The 5-1 defeat to Austria accounts for five of those goals, while Ghana have conceded at least twice in five of the 11 matches.

The streak has crossed coaches

What makes the sequence particularly notable is that it is not confined to one technical regime.

It began during Otto Addo’s tenure and included the four consecutive defeats against Japan, South Korea, Austria and Germany. Ghana subsequently changed their technical setup, but the results have remained inconsistent.

The Black Stars managed to beat Panama and draw with England during the World Cup, but defeats to Croatia, Colombia and now Côte d’Ivoire have followed.

For a team now beginning another qualifying campaign, those figures provide a stark statistical picture of the challenge facing Ghana as they turn their attention to The Gambia in Accra on September 29, 2026.
