Laryea Kingston Is a former Black Stars coach
Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has questioned the current state of the Black Stars, arguing that the team lacks consistency and proper long-term building.
According to Kingston, Ghana already has a core of senior players who have spent more than five years with the national team, but the frequent introduction of new players ahead of major tournaments is preventing the team from developing.
“From where I sit now, I don’t think we have a team. We don’t have a team,” Kingston said.
He explained that players who have been with the Black Stars for more than five years should naturally be regarded as senior members of the squad.
“We already have players that have played more than five years. So automatically, if you’ve been in the national team for more than five years, you are one of the senior players in the group. We already have that core,” he said.
However, Kingston expressed concern that the squad used during qualification campaigns often changes significantly when a major tournament approaches.

“It looks like the players that will play the qualifiers, when it’s getting close to the tournament, almost half of them will not even appear. All of a sudden, we see new faces coming from left, right, centre,” he added.
Kingston said he would not blame the team's management for the situation but instead placed responsibility on the coaches.
“I don’t blame the management. I blame the coaches. I blame the coaches because they are not firm,” he stated.
He questioned the rationale behind using one group of players throughout the qualifiers before introducing several new faces close to the tournament.
“I don’t understand why you should play a qualification with a group of players and then, getting close to the tournament, you start to bring new players. Then you are not building anything,” Kingston said.
He urged the Black Stars technical team to be decisive and focus on building a settled squad for the national team.
“They need to stand on their feet and make sure they are building a team for the nation,” he added.
