Burkina Faso President Ibrahim Traoré has announced plans for his government to intervene directly in the country’s football affairs, despite the possibility of sanctions from FIFA.

Traoré made the declaration on Monday, October 5, 2026, while receiving Burkina Faso’s U15 women’s team, following growing concerns over the state of football in the country.

During the speech, Traoré signaled his willingness to risk FIFA sanctions to push through changes.

“We have no choice; we have to step in, regardless of whether we get suspended or not,” Traoré said.

The announcement comes shortly after Burkina Faso suffered a heavy 7-0 defeat to Argentina in an international friendly, adding to concerns over the direction of the national game.

Traoré had earlier described Burkina Faso football as being “sick” and promised that his government would introduce measures to address the problems.

He said the intervention would seek to improve the organisation of football, infrastructure and the support available to players, while creating better conditions for young talents to develop.

“We are going to inject new energy so that people feel more at ease and can give their best,” he added.

The move, however, could put Burkina Faso on a collision course with FIFA, whose rules require member associations to manage their affairs independently of government interference.

Direct state intervention in the running of the Burkina Faso Football Federation could therefore expose the country to disciplinary action, including suspension from international competitions.

Burkina Faso are currently led administratively by FBF president Oumarou Sawadogo, who was elected in 2024.
