A controversial late penalty, a mass brawl involving players and spectators, and a match abandoned in chaos: the January 9, 1977, clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko remains one of the most dramatic incidents in Ghanaian football history.

The two rivals met at the Accra Sports Stadium for the Ghana Football Association’s Champion of Champions final, a contest to determine the overall champions after the 1976 season.

Hearts had won the league title, while Kotoko entered the game as FA Cup winners.

The encounter initially delivered an exciting contest, with Hearts taking the lead through Peter Lamptey in the 10th minute.

Kotoko responded through Abdul Razak, who levelled the score after a rebound, but Hearts regained the advantage when Lamptey scored his second goal following the interval.

With Hearts leading 2-1 towards the closing stages, Kotoko were awarded a penalty as they pushed for an equaliser.

The decision proved the turning point.

Hearts players protested against the referee’s decision, and the situation escalated when Anas Seidu reportedly attacked referee B.K. Dwemmoh as the penalty was about to be taken.

Players, spectators, police officers and football officials became involved in the ensuing confrontation, turning the stadium into a scene of disorder.

According to archived Reuters footage, the brawl lasted approximately 15 minutes before the referee abandoned the match because too few players remained available to continue.

The incident also had disciplinary consequences for Seidu, who was handed a one-year ban. The suspension was later lifted after he apologised.
