George Afriyie is former GFA Vice-President
Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has alleged that Bibiani Gold Stars and Medeama SC are yet to receive their prize money for winning the Ghana Premier League.
Gold Stars won the league title in the 2024/25 season, before Medeama claimed the championship in the 2025/26 campaign.
Ahead of the 2025/26 season, it was announced that each of the 18 Premier League clubs would receive GH₵1m, while the overall prize money for the season was set at GH₵2m.
However, Afriyie claims the two clubs are still awaiting their financial rewards, raising concerns about the timely payment of entitlements to teams competing in domestic and continental competitions.
“Now we play the league, and it ends; the winner will get maybe one million Ghana cedis. But, as far as I'm concerned, Gold Stars won the league and have still not received their prize money, as well as Medeama SC,” he told Ahenfie FM.
Afriyie warned that delays in releasing prize money could undermine clubs' preparations for continental assignments, particularly their ability to recruit players and cover travel and other logistical expenses.
“If the team that won the league is entitled to prize money of about one million Ghana cedis, it can prepare to play in Africa, won’t get it, and will go to Africa, and after the first game they are all eliminated and clearly nothing is working,” he added.
His comments come after Bibiani Gold Stars chief executive Akwasi Adu also revealed that the promised GH₵1m payment to each Premier League club had not been made.
