England-born striker Danny Welbeck has delivered what could end Ghana’s chase for his services after claiming: “I’m very proud to wear the England shirt.”

The Sunderland ace was born to Ghanaian parents and qualifies to play to represent the West African country at international level.

His spectacular goal for the England U-21 against Denmark in mid-week is inching him close to senior team call from Fabio Capello.

The 20-year-old admitted holding talks with Ghana FA officials but says he is far from considering a nationality switch.

“My mum and dad are from Ghana so I am eligible to play for both countries. I spoke briefly to a guy from the Ghana FA when he came to a Sunderland game to watch John Mensah, Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari but that’s all it is.

“The other lads have been going on about it but I’m very proud to wear the England shirt.”

Ghana striker and club-mate Asamoah Gyan has already said the youngster should be left alone to decide on his international future.
