A picture of Ghana's starting 11 for the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship
A photograph of Ghana’s starting line-up for the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship final against Argentina has resurfaced, bringing back memories of a remarkable generation that came agonisingly close to winning the country’s first global football title.
The picture features several players who would go on to enjoy distinguished careers, including Michael Essien, Sulley Ali Muntari, John Mensah, John Paintsil and Derek Boateng.
On July 8, 2001, the Black Satellites, coached by Emmanuel Kwasi Afranie, faced hosts Argentina at the José Amalfitani Stadium in Buenos Aires, with the world title at stake.
Ghana had enjoyed an impressive campaign, reaching the final after eliminating Brazil 2-1 after extra time in the quarter-finals before overcoming Egypt 2-0 in the semi-finals.
However, the final proved a difficult assignment against an Argentina side inspired by Javier Saviola.
Diego Colotto opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Saviola doubled the advantage eight minutes later.
Maximiliano Rodríguez added a third in the 73rd minute to hand Argentina a 3-0 victory and their fourth U-20 World Cup title.
The Ghanaian team that started that afternoon included goalkeeper Maxwell Owusu Banahene, Kwaku Duah, John Mensah, John Paintsil, Patrick Duodu Villars, Derek Boateng, Michael Essien, Razak Pimpong, Ibrahim Abdul Razak, Emmanuel Addoquaye Pappoe and Sulley Muntari.
Although the Black Satellites returned home without the trophy, the tournament marked the emergence of several players who would later become important figures in Ghana’s senior national team.
