Accra, June 16, GNA - Hans Van der Plyum, head coach of Kpando Heart of Lions has fingered the standard of play exhibited during the recently ended Premier Reserve League.
The Reserve League was introduced by the Premier League Board (PLB) for the 2010/2011 season as part of its efforts towards the unearthing and developing of more talents, but Van der Plyum has scored a low for the maiden edition.
The Dutchman told GNA Sports the standards of the competition expected to serve a platform for players usually below 20-years for team action as well as grounds for injured or out-of-form players was nothing above unsatisfactory.
"The standard was not too high and there was no team play either. But there were some individual quality."
After observing some games, coach Van der Plyum underscored for a re-visit to the format adding that it should start from the grassroots.
"We have to start with the basis; U-14 and U-17. The younger ones are the future and we have to begin with them and give them proper care and attention."
The Dutchman expressed shock at the decision to start with the U-20's after participants at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) organized seminar at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence unanimously agreed to the development of the younger generation.
"There was a meeting in Prampram and we agreed to start at the U-14 and U-17 level. At the level, you can really teach the players since they are very young and ready to learn."
He therefore expressed optimism of success at the end of the tunnel in the event of the sustenance of the competition.
"It is a very good idea and has to be continued. Also, we have to do the right thing and the results will be there for all to see."
Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs beat Wa All Stars 4-3 on penalties last Wednesday at the Ohene Djan, Accra to be crowned champions of the maiden edition of the Reserves league.
