Ohene Djan Stadium renamed Accra Sports Stadium

Accra, June 16, GNA – The national stadium, Ohene Djan Stadium appears to have formally reverted to its old name, the Accra Sports Stadium.

The 40,000-capcity stadium built over four decades ago and was named after Ohene Djan, Ghana’s first Director of Sports in 2004, with recent agitations for it to be named the Accra Sports stadium, especially by the Ga Traditional authorities among others.

It is now apparent that the facility has reversed to its former identity and during a visit to the “Nation’s Wembley” on Thursday afternoon by the GNA Sports team, contractors were busily seen inscribing Accra Sports Stadium over the previous banner of Ohene Djan Stadium.

A portion of the stadium adjacent to the Independence Square also has a bold inscription “Accra Sports Stadium” on the walls.

When contacted, Directors and Senior Staff of the National Sports Authority (NSA) opted to the latest development.

However, efforts to contact the Director General of the NSA, Wolanyo Agra proved fruitless.

It would be recalled that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in September 2010 declared that the stadium has been re-christened Accra Metropolitan Assembly after deliberations between the Executives.

The move was met with diverse reactions from the public but the latest move confirms the request made.

The Stadium has carved a niche as one of the most popular sporting facilities within the sub-region and Africa as a whole after hosting several high profile matches.

It hosted the final of the 1978 and 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, in Accra, Ghana. GNA
