The league which should have kicked off on Sunday, 31 march, was postponed following an announcement by the Professional League Board last Thursday .

A statement signed by Mr K. Ampim-Darko, Deputy General Secretary (Technical) of the Ghana Football Association, said the postponement was necessitated by a number of factors including a request from club chairmen.

It said other reasons were the emergency situation in parts of the Northern Region and a request from the Ghana League Clubs Association on some unresolved matters with the National Sports Council.

"The Professional League Board expresses its regrets for any inconvenience caused to the general public," the statement said.

Barring any more hitches, the Premier League will kick off this coming weekend with matches at all the centres with the Liberty Professionals versus Asante Kotoko encounter at the Accra Stadium on Saturday topping the pack.

According to the fixtures, Accra Hearts of Oak will open the defence of the league championship with a home game against Bofoakwa Tano while Goldfields take on Dawu Youngsters at Obuasi.

Other fixtures are: King Faisal versus Okwawu United in Kumasi, Hasaacas take on Arsenals at the Sekondi Gyandu Park, B.A. United clash with Accra Great Olympics at Sunyani, Maxbees versus Power FC at Koforidua and RTU versus Mine Stars at Tamale.

League begins Today

March 31 2002 -- THE multi-million cedi question as to who emerges the next soccer force now that the long-standing hegemony of Accra Hearts of Oak appears to have broken, will finally be resolved when the pages of the new season are flipped in the coming weeks.

Like the old adage, which says that, “every animal gets the chance to beat the elephant when it falls,” clubs like Asante Kotoko, Goldfields, Olympics and Liberty Professionals have already begun flexing their muscles following the fall of the big Oak tree.

For these teams, the perception is that they now have a fine opportunity to take their pound of flesh by winning this year's championship after a five-year dominance by Hearts.

But the Phobians who are in no mood to compromise their sweet reign say the current crisis permeating their ranks is just temporary and that the end is surely going to justify the means.

Such is the interesting terrain on which the various contenders will be seeking their fortune when all 16 teams get on their marks this weekend to respond to the starter's gun in a fierce and thrilling fashion. What a way to open an ambitious campaign when the nation's only bright spot in Africa, Kotoko, make a triumphant return from Angola to confront strong outsiders, Liberty Professionals, in a crucial top liner at the Accra Stadium.

But as fate would have it, that match has been rescheduled following Kotoko’s battling with flight problems on their way back from Angola. Kotoko requested for the postponement of the match since the return of their players in trickles would not make it possible for them to honour the match just a day after the arrival of the last batch.

At the same venue on Sunday, lone ranger, Charles Taylor, will be compelled to embark on a rescue mission to deliver Hearts from any upset against visiting Bofoakwa at a time the Phobians are busily engaged in crisis management. However, much will also depend on the new head coach, Herbert Addo, to restore the sinking image of the Phobians.

Obuasi Goldfields who were scheduled to return home yesterday after their fruitless trip to Guinea are expected to bring the smiles back on the faces of their fans when they host Dawu Youngsters at the Len Clay Stadium. All things being equal, coach Oti-Akenten will strengthen his attack with new recruits, J. B. Danquah and Martin Apau to ensure victory.

The adoption of the Bolga Stadium by RTU will have nothing to do with their determination to baptise new entrants, Mine Stars, with fire.

At Koforidua, Power FC will prove to Maxbees that they are the original landlords when the two clash in a fierce and exciting local derby while King Faisal would have the edge over Okwawu United in their tough match in Kumasi.

Newly-crowned gala champions, B. A United, will have an uneasy task of proving to Brong Ahafo fans that their current status is no fluke when they encounter Great Olympics at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

“Once a Wonder Club, always a Wonder Club”. This is the message the Dade Boys will be having for their young opponents when they engage in an uncompromising pitch battle.

At the Cape Coast Siwdu Park, highly depleted Hasaacas will struggle hard to hold their own against Berekum Arsenals.
