Promasidor Ghana Limited, producers of Cowbel powdered milk, are investing 430,000ghc into the development of athletics in Ghana.
The amount, in cash and kind will be channeled into the organization of the first ever National Junior Elite Athletics Championship fixed for August 8-10, at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
The Championship dubbed “Cowbel National Junior Athletics Championship” and opened to basic schools nationwide is aimed at unearthing talents to compete at international competitions.
Every region in the country is expected to conduct a regional championship to select their team for the national championship.
Festus Tettey, Marketing Manager of Promasidor Ghana Limited, said the initiative was in fulfillment of their pledge to revive the sport in Ghana.
He hoped that the championship will serve as the platform for identification and nurturing of talents for the nation.
According to Tettey, the first three athletes in both male and female categories will be given scholarships to pursue further studies and continue with their career as well.
He said the event will be held in partnership with the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) and will be an annual programme.
Professor Francis Dodoo, President of the GAA, said the offer was coming at the right time, when there was the need to increase the number of athletes in the country.
The president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) who has been bashed for not organizing events said “the era when the country depends on one athlete in each category must be a thing of the past. We need to unearth more athletes with the required qualities to meet international standards to increase the chances of the country in winning laurels at the international level”.
