Black Queens "Robbed"

Wed, 26 Feb 2003 Source: Freelance Reporter

The National Senior Female soccer team, the Black Queens, were said to have received three thousand US dollars ($3,000.00) each, for their participation in the African Female Soccer tournament held in Nigeria recently and their qualification for the world cup this year in China.

Rumors prior to the team’s participation in Nigeria had it that each player will be given five thousand US dollars ($5,000.00) if they should qualify for the world cup to be played later this year in China.

Sources in Ghana reveal that some of the girls signed for three thousand US dollars ($3,000.00), but later found out that they had only two thousand US dollars ($2,000.00).

In the face of positive change and open government being preached by the Kuffour government, one would have thought that management of the only soccer team in Ghana to have qualified for the premiership of soccer tournament globally twice, the Black Queens, (their counterparts, the Black Stars are still searching for this elusive honor) should have had their rewards announced to the press.

This will not only dispel rumors of business as usual but will make the every Ghanaian proud that the achievements of our “QUEENS” were not over looked by the government.

It is not uncommon in Africa, for crook officials to manipulate and later inflate such stipends to players.

One would have wished that the government assist these young “QUEENS” with free financial advice so that they can invest their earnings profitably, to secure a brighter future for them.

Hopefully twenty years from now, our present Black Queens will still be “QUEENS” and not destitute as has befallen our past soccer heroes.
