Jeffrey Schlupp believes hard work will prevail as Leicester City look to push on in the Barclays Premier League following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton.

Operating at left-back against the Saints, the Ghanaian international played his 100th game in a Leicester shirt against Ronald Koeman’s men. The Academy graduate helped his side defend resolutely for long periods of the game, and they were only undone when substitute Shane Long came off the bench to net a second-half double.

Speaking to Foxes Player, he said: “It’s another loss that we obviously didn’t want. You can see why Southampton are right up there with some of their play in the game.

“But at the end of the day, I think we could have defended better at times – we need to cut out the mistakes that are costing us.

“The boys grafted out there for 60 to 70 minutes but in future I think we need to try and get that early goal and get a foothold in the game and also take our chances.

“We know we’re going to be limited but we knew how hard the league was going to be this year. The lads have got to work hard, take positives from the games, and look to go again.”

The Foxes host Sunderland at King Power Stadium in just under two weeks’ time and will look to put to an end a six-game winless run in the 2014/15 campaign.

But Schlupp knows his side can progress when City’s stars return from international duty, providing they continue to put in the hard work both on and off the pitch.

“When you’re on bad runs like this you know you’ve got to stick together and work hard,” he added. “But like I’ve said, we’ve got to take the positives out of the game.

“We always look forward to the next game to put it right – I’m sure the boys will be raring to go after the international break.

“I think I did OK [against Southampton] but we’ve come away with nothing. It’s good to be back in the team after missing out a couple of games. The boys will be disappointed but we’ll be working hard on the training pitch.”
