Davis Cup: Slovenia here to play Golden Rackets

THE Slovenian tennis team arrived in Accra last Sunday night to engage their Ghanaian counterparts in their Euro Africa Zone Two Davis Cup tie scheduled for the Accra Stadium tennis courts this weekend.

One day into their stay in the country, the visiotrs took time to shake themselves off the fatigue that had engulfed them as a result of the journey with light work at the stadium tennis courts.

Side by side, the Ghanaian team, now pruned to just four after a successful elimination contest among seven of them, fine-tunned their skills with their training regimen on other courts.

Gunther Darkey, Salifu Mohammed, George Buckman and Kwasi Ahinkora (Ghana-based) gained superior marks over Daniel Omaboe, Frederick Egyir and Patrick Nartey in the elimination services, thus forming the team to defend Ghana from Friday to Sunday.

One other player, Samuel Fumi was expected from his US base yesterday and is expected to justify his inclusion in the team between today and Thursday.

This weekend’s Davis Cup tie will be the second time in succession that the two nations are meeting in the competition.

Last May, the Rackets crossed swords with their Slovenian counterparts in the European state and lost by a miserable 1-4 margin.

This time round, the Ghanaians are playing host and have vowed to avenge last year’s defeat with similar embarrassing effect against the Europeans.
