On Friday 9 May, 2003, whilst many Ghanaians were marking the second anniversary of the MAY 9 disaster which struck the country two years ago, that claimed an unprecedented 126 plus 1 precious lives, a group of individuals led by George Arthur, former Ghanaian International one Baba Sumaila, Mbaaba, one Alidu, a TV repairer, Kofi Asare, unemployed, Mahamadu Taller and others, decided to take the law into their hands.
Arthur, who earlier on Friday had been restrained by a Berekum Circuit Court from holding himself as the Chief Executive of Premier Club/A United, allegedly met some supporters of the Club claiming the GFA had asked him to use every available means to secure the CARD A of players of B/A United from Mr. Kingsley Osei Bonsu (ZICO), the legitimate Chairman of the Club.
Arthur allegedly gathered some of the Club’s sympathisers and went to the Police station to be issued with a permit in order to embark on demonstration, to compel Mr. Osei Bonsu to release the cards to him. Unfortunately for him and his group, their request was turned down by the District Police Commander, on the grounds that they did not meet the five-day notice as demanded by the Public Order ACT. Having had their request turned down, Arthur and his cronies decided to take the law into their own hands, and went rioting, vandalizing an OPEL VECTRA with registration number GW 5885, belonging to Zico and in the process injuring Mr.Ransford Antwi, the former’s cousin who was then in the car with a driver.
Before this incident, the group had stormed the premises of Oyinka Trading Enterprise, as well as the SWEET TOUCH Restaurant, all believed to belong to Zico causing considerable damage there.
As if that was not enough, Arthur and his men chanting war songs moved to Zico’s residence, where massive damage was caused. In the process, a new Radio Station in Sunyani, SPACE FM which is situated in the building was badly damaged by the group. As the issue became the topic of almost every conversation in Sunyani, with many blaming George Arthur for his boastfulness and lack of maturity, and sensing that he was being hotly pursued by the Police, he immediately left Sunyani and this reporter can confirm that he was seen in Accra on Saturday morning.
In an interview, Mr. Kingsley Osei Bonsu stated that he has always believed in the due process of the law, and would allow the law to take its course. Many people who spoke to this reporter blamed the George Arthur for resorting to violence to achieve his goal and hoped the law would take its course.
