Division One league club, King Solomon, have apologised to Ghanaians and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after their fans beat up referee Sampson Azuma in their league match against Great Olympics played over the weekend.
Referee Azuma and his assistants Ismael Acquah and J.K Abora were physically assaulted at the Kwahu Mpraeso Park by King Solomon fans. He sustained cuts on his head, leaving his jersey soaked with blood.
Fans of the home team got furious with the referee and his assistants for taking certain decisions, which resulted in a 0-1 defeat to visiting club, Olympics.
Chairman of King Solomon, Alhaji Nash, in an exclusive interview with Class Sports on Monday May 23, apologised on behalf of the fans and added that they were ready to accept any disciplinary action from the Division One League Board (DOLB).
“Any decision they [DOLB] will bring on board, I will take it in good faith. I take this opportunity to apologise to all Ghanaians that this thing happened, I was not happy and to the Ghana Football Association, I don’t think this thing will happen again,” he said.
He noted that apart from the assault on referee Azuma, the fans also pounced on him for Solomon’s loss.
Alhaji Nash added: “All [was] about bad officiating. …In my team, I always educate my fans that I don’t like fighting after a game; …if these things happen, I don’t think it will help Ghana football, so after the game the supporters were aggressive and annoyed with the decisions of the referee, myself as the chairman, I was beaten.”
The DOLB is yet to act on the incident.
