Ashanti Gold coach C.K Akunnor is optimistic of retaining their top-flight status after his side’s 2-0 win over Wafa at the Len Clay Sports Stadium on Sunday.

After an incredible run of four successive victories in June, the Obuasi-based club's hopes of surviving relegation was a dealt a big blow when they were shocked at home by Elmina Sharks, coupled with a defeat in Accra to Liberty Professionals.

However, goals from Hans Kwoffie and Samed Ibrahim gave them a priceless victory and glimmer of hope on Sunday.

"I am happy with the results against Wafa. The boys played very well and have finally returned to winning ways having lost two games back to back is good for us," Akunnor said.

"We have to build on this and try to record impressive results going forward to keep our ambition of remaining in the league intact. I'm optimistic we're not going to get relegated but we must improve on each matchday.

"We thank the fans for their support and this is what we need to make us compete again next season," he added.

Ashanti Gold are now three points clear of the drop zone and hold 31 points ahead of the six remaining games to end the season.

After the league returns from a four-week break on August 27, they will travel to Kumasi to lock horns with regional rivals Asante Kotoko in the Asante derby.
