The team arrived yesterday after securing a slot in the quarter finals of the championship
Ghana fastest growing racket sport, Badminton Team- the black Shuttlers arrived from Yogyakarta,Indonesia yesterday, October 24, 2017, after they successfully competed for the first time in the World Badminton Championship.
The Badminton World Championships has been held annually and consists of two separate competitions: mixed team championships for the Suhandinata Cup followed by individual championships for the Eye Level Cups – all hosted within 25 days of competition and attracted 45 Countries teams and 480 players from around the world.
The Championships provides badminton fans with a first glimpse of the stars of the future. The World Championship is the first opportunity for talented badminton players to represent their country in a world event in the sport. It is also an opportunity to experience top-level competition and perhaps put them on the pathway towards becoming one of the stars of the future toward the Olympics.
Korean educational service provider, Daekyo, sponsored the annual tournament with the sponsorship running through to 2020. As part of its support, Dr Kang Young Joong, former BWF President (2005 – 2013) and Chairman of Daekyo, provides a total cash pool of USD96,000 to be given each year in scholarships for the winners of each of the five individual championship events.
The world championship saw Ghana and forty-five other nations battling each other at the highest level in badminton, with Team Ghana performing the best in Africa and placing 21st in the global Competiton out of 45 participating Countries in the World Championships.
The eight-member contingent led by Cynthia Adamtey and Coach Philip Baah and athlete contingent of Andrews Ebenezer, Emmanuel Botwe, Daniel Doe, Eryram Yaa Migbodzi, Jennifer Abitty and Grace Atipaka. The team participated in the two event which was a championship towards the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Australia and 2018 Youth Olympics, Buenos Aires.
“We are on target of our elite development programme towards our 2020 Olympics, this overwhelming results by the team puts Ghana Badminton on the right pedestal of our African dominance over the sport and to have achieved these virtuous results in a World Championship Participation makes us proud of our national talents proliferates. Our national team is on a reel , and I can see them winning more laurels for the Country with the needed support from the Ministry of Youth & Sports and Corporate Ghana. The brand and awareness being created with the sport, enlightens and strengthens into our 2018 Strategic Plan,” Badminton Associatioin of Ghana, Yeboah Evans said.
The team will be met on arrival by the board members of the association, fans and lovers of the sports and some officials from the Sports Ministry.
